Who Is It For? Understanding the Advanced Diver Certification
The SDI Advanced Diver program caters to certified open water divers who are keen to elevate their diving skills and embrace the challenges of advanced underwater exploration. Ideal candidates include divers with an SDI Open Water Scuba Diver certification or its equivalent, and those aged 18 and above, or 10 with parental consent, showing a strong desire to advance their dive training.
This program is also perfect for SDI Advanced Adventure divers seeking to deepen their expertise in the specialties they’ve tasted during their previous adventures. Prerequisites ensure that participants have a solid foundation in basic diving skills, are comfortable in the water, and are ready to take on the demands of advanced diving. This program is a critical step for divers who are serious about expanding their knowledge, skills, and experience in the diving world, setting the stage for a lifetime of underwater discovery and achievement.
Advanced Learning: What You Will Master
You will explore and master detailed aspects of four chosen SDI, TDI, or ERDI specialty courses. This targeted learning approach allows for personalized development in areas that interest you most, from technical aspects to practical dive skills, broadening your diving capabilities significantly. Potentially work on improving your buoyancy, navigation, air consumption, dive planning and more in the program.

With a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical dive experiences, this course is structured to build your confidence and skill in conducting advanced dives. You’ll leave the program as a proficient, well-rounded diver ready to tackle more challenging underwater explorations and step into higher-level dive training.
The SDI Advanced Diver Development Program was created to make true advanced divers. Under the old way of training a student could take an advanced course immediately following an open water course, and only have a total of 9 dives, all under the direct training of an instructor.
The SDI Advanced Diver Development program requires a new open water student to complete 4 SDI, TDI or ERDI Specialties or equivalent, combined with 25 logged dives.
SDI Advanced Diver Certification procedures for students: 1. Completion of 4 SDI, TDI, or ERDI Specialty Courses or equivalent; only 1 course without dives may be credited toward the Advanced Diver. Nitrox counts as a diving specialty. 2. Proof of 25 logged dives. 3. After the previous requirements are met and verified by an instructor, the instructor must issue the SDI Advanced Diver certification by submitting the SDI Diver Registration form to SDI Headquarters or the Regional Office or registering the students online through members area of the SDI/TDI/ERDI website. 4. Requirements for the SDI Junior Advanced include the above requirements, provided the 4 specialty courses they have taken are allowed by their age.
